Anecdotally, most hoteliers will agree that reviews and online user-generated content are important for business. Quantifying this importance, however, is often difficult. We recently developed a study together with Donna Quadri-Felitti, Academic Chair and Clinical Associate Professor at NYU, Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism to better understand the effect that online reviews have on hotel conversion rates and pricing at the point of purchase. I’m not gonna lie, I was inspired by The Standard’s 2014 calendar. Who doesn’t love reading through bizarre hotel reviews, especially when they are accompanied by great photography? The calendar got me thinking about what other crazy reviews are out there in cyberspace. TrustYou has a database of more than 250 million hotel reviews to peruse, so I took a look. I recently saw a quote float by on Facebook (which, of course, I can’t find anymore so forgive the paraphrase) about how we spend our entire youths dedicated to getting the righteous A, but as adults there aren’t any A’s.
