The Best Hawaiian Beach Hotels, researched separately due to distance and traveler expectations, is made up almost entirely of luxury properties along with two full-service condominium accommodations.

The 2013 Best Beach Hotels in Hawaii list features significantly more luxury hotel brands; however, the overall range of TrustScores is lower than that of the U.S. mainland. “Guests may have higher expectations of the Hawaiian market due to rates, distance from the mainland, and the price to get to the destination. That said, the overall scores are still excellent,” notes Young.

The 2013 Best Beach Hotels list was compiled by reviewing the TrustScores of over 50 beach hotels from recent popularity lists, including Travel & Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Budget Travel, and more. The TrustScores used to build the lists are based on overall guest satisfaction over the past two years of online hotel review scores across all review sites, as well as a proprietary sentiment algorithm that considers positive and negative mentions. More recent reviews are given more weight than older reviews.

* TrustScores are based on a scale of 1-100, with anything 87 or above qualifying as “Excellent” performance.
