U.S travel unveils tool to measure tourism impact on state economics:

Amid calls by some state lawmakers to cut state and destination marketing budgets, the U.S. Travel Association released this week the Travel Economic Impact Calculator (TEIC). This is a tool designed to show the direct impact of an increase or decrease in traveler spending on a state's economy—and how travel-generated tax revenues directly supports public sector jobs—like firefighters, police officers and public school teachers. Travel promotion plays an integral role in driving tourism to destinations. Increased investment in travel and tourism promotion attracts more visitors, whose spending creates jobs, fuels the local economy and generates tax revenue supporting vital public services.

Trends and Insights

International travel with one of the highest growth rates in the last twenty years:

2017 has been an exceptionally strong year for international travel, with Europe being the main growth driver as both a source market as well as a destination region. Worldwide, the number of outbound trips has increased by 6.5 per cent, reaching nearly 1.2 billion international trips in 2017. Also positively, for the first time since IPK surveys the impact of terrorism on international travel, terror sensitivity has decreased and destinations are perceived as “safer” than before. These findings are based on latest results of IPK’s World Travel Monitor, an annual survey analyzing the outbound travel behavior in more than 60 countries worldwide, covering over 90 per cent of the global outbound demand.

‘Exponential growth’ for Hotelbeds Group’s APItude last year:

Hotelbeds Group had recently announced that its newest hotel distribution API, APItude, saw an almost 10-factor ‘exponential growth’ last year, where almost 300 million daily requests were being fielded. In addition to the increased volume of requests daily, the group also revealed that response times have also improved to under 0.5 seconds as a result of a complete migration to the cloud, following the launch of APItude Cloud in late 2016. APItude is the fastest and lightest hotel distribution API currently in the market which makes the integration process easier, faster and more intuitive and allows partners to more easily develop their own travel website or mobile app using Hotelbeds Group’s product portfolio.

Hipmunk enhances flight search with features to make comparison easier:

Hipmunk by Concur has redesigned its flight search interface to make comparison shopping easier, including sorting for the cabin and service features passengers want most. The results also show variants on features available by fares classes, to help travelers better judge the value of the ticket they book. In addition to showing details on what fees policies apply to various fares tiers by each flight listing, the new Hipmunk flight search design adds a “Show Me” column which reveals passenger experience features available on each leg.
