Instagram: How Not to Post Images of Your Hotel

The thing I find fascinating about Instagram is that the hotels doing it well have very few photos of their rooms, sometimes few overt photos of the property at all. What you’ll notice if you scroll through the account of say Morgans Hotel Group or The Standard Hotel is that you still get the hotel’s image—loud and clear—without a bunch of boring bathroom and lobby shots.

You can put one person in charge of this or you can do something more interesting like have many of your staff visually chronicle interesting things about the property or the city. Who knows the ins-and-outs of the property better than the people working behind the scenes. This could apply to Pinterest, too (a board called “Staff Picks,” perhaps).

The other thing about Instagram is that guests are posting photos of your property in all likelihood. (And, wow, there are some great photos out there!) Search your hashtag and see how your property looks from their perspective. If it’s not looking so hot, it’s time to consider this feedback in your planning. Like I said earlier in the week, this is reputation management, too.
